Special Care Tips for Silk Oriental Rugs

Although many of the Oriental rugs you will enter in Western homes are made from natural wool there is another option; silk. And silk is indeed making quite the comeback in the design world right now, especially as their sheer, more delicate appearance makes them an excellent choice for a very modern apartment or a room decorated in a very contemporary style.

As you might imagine though a silk Oriental rug is not as durable as its wool counterparts. That means that protecting and caring for them is something of a different proposition:

Protection through Prevention

The very best way to protect a silk Oriental rug is to exercise sensible prevention measures. A silk rug will not fare well in a very high traffic area so it should be placed somewhere where it will not be tramped across all day and where it will not receive too much direct sunlight that could fade its delicate colors.

Like any other rug or carpet an Oriental rug made using silk will benefit from regular commercial cleaning, although it may be best to stick to just a couple of times a week instead of every day. If your vacuum has a beater bar make sure that it is not in place when you vacuum your silk rug and if you have one of those very high suction machines take care with that as well.

Dealing with Spills and Stains

However careful you are though, accidents do happen. You can employ a handful of DIY techniques to prevent immediate damage but don’t use anything other than the method listed below as using store bought carpet cleaning and spot removal treatments can seriously damage the delicate silk fibers.

Probably the most important thing you can do to limit the damage caused by a spill on your silk Oriental rug is to act fast.  As soon as you notice the spill slightly dampen a clean white cloth (not a colored paper towel) with warm (not super-hot) water and then blot - never rub- the stain to absorb the spill into the towel and out of the rug.

If that does not work you can try again, blotting the stain with a mixture of 50% warm water and 50% distilled white vinegar.

Whilst on the subject of cleaning, it really is essential that an Oriental silk rug be professionally cleaned every twelve months or so, whether you think it needs to be or not. Unseen dust and debris that finds its way into the rug's fibers can degrade them faster than you might imagine, and only a professional Oriental rug cleaning can remove all of them.
